Q: What is non-medical in-home care?
A:
Simply put, this type of service offers companionship and living assistance to
the elderly without any specialized medical care. For example, the home care
provider may help the person he’s caring for take medicine. Non-medical in-home
care providers may even help with monitoring vital signs. However, these providers
can’t give specialized medical treatment. Although non-medical in-home care providers
can be a nurse, therapist, or other medical professional, they aren’t hired for their
medical care experience. Instead, the provider’s job will be to make your relative
or friend more comfortable and assist with their daily activities. Some tasks that the
provider may help with:
- Answering the door
- Driving to the store
- Offering communication and providing entertainment
- Planning safe outings
- Mailing bills and personal correspondence
- Preparing meals
- Picking up prescriptions, dry cleaning, groceries, and other necessities
This relationship between patient and provider is also referred to as non-medical companion
services and can constitute either a daily or live-in situation. Non-medical companion
services are usually intended for elderly individuals who can function on their
own, but need assistance with certain activities and events. While the majority of people
who need this level of care are seniors, it’s also widely available for handicapped or
injured individuals, as well as children and adults with special needs.
